It’s sad to see so many other people who have had problems with Bosch ebikes and how bad they (and most of the dealer network) are at helping to solve them!
My story this far. I’ve had 3 Haibikes with the classic motor in. All have had this problem. 2 bikes have had motors replaced completely. The other is now faulty with surging acceleration and aslo not disengaging power when you stop pedalling (very dangerous in traffic!).
Ass a glutton for punishment, I also have 2 other bikes with their new gen 2 performance motor in. The first one developed this grinding noise – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5wQq2_PEgQ – within 6 months. Had to go back to the retailer who said dirt/water is getting in the motor and corroding it! Hmmm, wouldn’t you seal a motor on a full on downhill suspension MTB.
The second one has now developed the exact same grinding noise (and it’s not even an off road bike – just a touring bike) but so far I haven’t had the will to go to get it sorted.
I’ve also seen that James from Justebikes.co.uk has been posting on forums that, “I’m a liar’ about getting my problem sorted. I have and will retain the full communication list with them for any inspection. In the end he said “tough luck” and we won’t honour to pick the bike up.
Some time later he text me to say he was suing me! I’m not sure what for but perhaps, “the truth hurts”!

The retailer who supplied this JustEbikes.co.uk have now refused to sort out the problem. I have had 100+ emails between myself and JustEbikes.co.uk and it has been a real learning curve of how not to be a retailer. It is worth noting for anyone out there considering using JustEbikes.co.uk that if anything goes wrong then your chances of getting it sorted out are next to zero. My bike hasn’t been working now since Jan 2013 – getting on for 10 months to date!
I have had 2 Bosch eBike motors now on 2 different electric mountain bikes.
You will see from this (ok, very boring) video that there is a banging or a ‘clack’ on each revolution of the crank, when you apply pressure on the down stroke to the left pedal.
The bikes were not very old when the problem started occurring. In fact on my latest bike the problem started after just 30 miles on it – so it isn’t an age issue!

Apparently there is a disc of sorts in the motor that senses pressure on the pedals and speed and then engages or disengages the Bosch eBike motor to give power or not. The noise you can hear is this disc popping in and out on each crank revolution.
I can’t imagine that this little disc is going to last the potentially hundreds of thousands of ‘clacks’ it would experience over the lifetime.
I have been in touch with Bosch and they are apparently looking in to it but have no answer as yet.
I would be interested to hear if any other Bosch eBike electric motor owners have had similar problems?
If/when I hear from Bosch on what the problem is and potentially a fix for it then I will update it here for potential Bosch ebike motor owners to see and be aware of.
UPDATE: 28th June 2013…
The guys I’ve bought my bike from are trying really hard to work with both Haibike and Bosch on sorting the problem. BUT … both the companies are putting their heads in the sand supposedly.
From the comments here I can see that this a common fault. And now – crazy, I know – I have bought a 3rd Haibike – guess what! …. 30 miles of riding and then exactly the same clacking noise as shown in this video – incredible.
What I don’t understand is that a company as big as Bosch cannot be bothered to try and rectify this problem. 3 out of 3 bikes for me have had it and of course we can see here many others have. Also a friend of mine has a Scott ebike with a Bosch in and the same problem.
Seriously Bosch – you can’t treat people like this on bike that cost £thousands!
