UPDATE 4 (reposted from below) – The stuck rings allowed the oil to be contaminated – this was new oil as well! Fortunately the engine only needed new rings as one was broken, all the bearings were as good as new on the 110,000 mile engine, some noticeable piston skirt wear which was different for each cylinder caused by the blocked oil holes in the skirt its self rather then age, but the pistons were reused and the engine, now at 130,000 miles is running a treat. The bearings really did look brand new – this says something about how the hybrid system really does look after the engine very well – Prius engines are proving good enough to last an entire lifetime of motoring – don’t know how long the body will last but Toyota paint is regarded as the best in the industry – Prius cars used for demanding taxi work are lasting over a million miles, the batteries are lasting half a million miles or more, and are getting more durable as Toyota learns from its world leading experience in the field. Early Prius batteries were failure prone after 120,000 miles, but the one in my car is still going strong.
UPDATE 3 – All back together and running like a dream, only replaced the piston rings after one was found to be broken, everything else is was just cleaned up and put back in. Great to have my magical car back! )
UPDATE 2 – Got it all cleaned up – now to put it back together with new rings (as well as the usual gaskets etc.).
UPDATE 1 – have started to clean up the pistons, the bearings are showing no signs of wear and will be reused, I did find a broken piston ring, so good clean up and a new set of rings will be required to get back on the road. In 43 years of taking engines to bits, this is the very worst engine gum up my garage mechnic has ever seen – no wonder it came up with a ‘check engine’ light. Engine is very good quality and coped with no damage other then a broken ring.
A video of my Toyota Prius engine after I put the wrong fuel in it four tankfulls of petrol ago, the video is ‘back to front’ – meaning that the first part is the dismantled pistons, the secont part is before the pistons have come out – I now believe that the wrong fuel a gallon or so of bio diesel (oops!) clogged up the rings, allowing the oil to escape past the pistons and foul everything up during the few hundreds of miles I did on petrol after the misfill – I started to hear knocking sounds from the top of the engine, both my local mechanic, an experienced engine rebuilder, and myself thought the diesel ‘knock’ had broken a little end bearing, but the bearings are fine, the noise may be the valves starting to tap the thick layer of crud rapidly building up on top of the pistons. the valves fortunately appear to be ok, other then all the crud. This is my theory – but please feel free to comment! It’s a lovely engine and despite the lack of space, its been a pleasure to work on.
