The original intention was to pulse charge a set of NiCd and NiMH for general purpose use. The project was successful, and now upgraded with capacitor pulser. Shown in the video, I use my hand to do the discharge, it was upgraded with a SCR later.
Playing with it long enough, I find that the performance is just like a solid state buck-boost converter, although the rotary ones easier to construct and satisfying fun to watch.
The circuit can be use on any 3ph BLDC, but the simplicity prohibit higher power use, say, to drive an automotive alternator, the start up moment needs to be fast enough before the transistor burn to death.
As fun as it seems, it has almost no torque at all, rendering it close to useless for any practical use. The voltage produced in the video might reach over 300V, but at low current, even common CFL can’t be lit up.
