This video shows a comparison between the ball joints on OE “Genuine Mercedes” front lower control arms (LCA) and the TRW aftermarket version. This is the late style control arm used on 124 and 129 chassis with 294mm, 295mm, 320mm, or 334mm front brakes. The ball joint is not replaceable separately on these control arms.
There have been a number of recent reports on PeachParts and 500Eboard forums of Febi ball joint failures on the Febi brand LCA’s. Since TRW makes the OE control arm, I thought the TRW aftermarket LCA might be the same as OE. Unfortunately, it appears that the TRW aftermarket LCA may be produced in the same factory as Febi, as the TRW aftermarket (JTC1246 & JTC1247) are visually almost identical to the Febis, and both are clearly not the same as the OE “Genuine Mercdes” LCA. The OE LCA’s are nearly triple the price, which is why the Febi and TRW aftermarket LCA’s are enticing, or rather they would be if the quality was comparable.
Note in the video how the TRW (and Febi) ball joint dust/grease boot will pull right off when the joint is moved through normal range of motion, compared to the OE boot which remains in place. Also, the TRW (and Febi) allow much more side-to-side movement compared to OE. Not visible in the video is the OE ball joint has a plastic sleeve at the bottom of the ball joint shaft, above the spherical joint, while the TRW does not, that is why you hear an audible “click” when the TRW joint moves side to side. Additionally, the groove on the TRW is over 10% wider, approx 26mm compared to 23mm on OE. Detailed photos are available on my website.
